Types of Trucking Insurance Coverage Explained

Know What You Need And Why It Matters

Choosing the right insurance is about more than checking a box. It’s about making sure you’re protected when something goes wrong, compliant with the law, and covered for the contracts you take on.

At Premiere Solutions Insurance Agency, Inc., we don’t believe in one-size-fits-all policies. We build insurance programs tailored to your operation, and it starts with helping you understand your options.

Here’s a breakdown of the most important types of trucking insurance and how each one works.

We will walk you through it.

Primary Types of Trucking Insurance

1. Commercial Auto Liability (Required)

This is the foundation of any trucking policy. It protects you if your truck causes injury or property damage to someone else while operating on public roads.

Includes:

  • Bodily injury liability
  • Property damage liability
  • Legal defense costs

Required by:

  • FMCSA (if interstate)
  • State DOTs
  • Brokers and shippers

2. Physical Damage Coverage

This covers your truck and trailer, not just what you might hit. It includes both collision and comprehensive protection.

Covers:

  • Accidents
  • Theft or vandalism
  • Fire or weather damage
  • Glass and parts repair

This is essential if you’re financing a vehicle or can’t afford unexpected out-of-pocket repairs.

3. Motor Truck Cargo Insurance

This protects the freight you’re hauling. If cargo is lost, damaged, or stolen while in your care, cargo insurance helps cover the value.

Often required by:

  • Freight brokers
  • Shippers
  • Load boards

Policies vary by cargo type, so we’ll match the coverage to what you haul, whether it’s sod, electronics, reefer freight, or flatbed loads.

4. General Liability Insurance

Covers your business for claims that happen off the road, such as at terminals, loading docks, offices, or job sites.

Covers:

  • Property damage during delivery
  • Bodily injury at client locations
  • Product or advertising liability

Ideal for companies that deal with customers, subcontractors, or job sites beyond just driving.

5. Bobtail Insurance (Non-Dispatched Driving)

Protects your truck when operating without a trailer or outside of dispatch. Many leased-on owner-operators are required to carry this by motor carriers.

Applies when:

  • Driving home from a drop-off
  • In transit between loads
  • Not officially under dispatch

6. Non-Trucking Liability (NTL)

This covers your truck when using it for personal, non-business reasons, like errands, parking, or off-duty movement.

Important distinction:

  • Bobtail = business use, no trailer
  • NTL = personal use, off-duty

We’ll help you decide if you need one or both.

7. Trailer Interchange Insurance

Covers physical damage to non-owned trailers you’re using under a written interchange agreement.

Common in:

  • Port freight
  • Drop-and-hook operations
  • Intermodal shipping
  • Terminal-based swaps

Without this, you’re financially responsible for trailers you don’t own but are hauling.

8. Reefer Breakdown Coverage

If your refrigerated unit fails and the cargo is spoiled, this coverage helps replace the load and protect your contract.

Best for:

  • Food transport
  • Floral or nursery freight
  • Pharmaceuticals

Available as an add-on to motor truck cargo policies.

9. Occupational Accident Insurance (Optional)

Protects owner-operators and independent drivers who don’t qualify for workers’ comp but still want injury protection on the job.

Covers:

  • Medical bills
  • Lost income
  • Accidental death or disability

Affordable coverage for those without employee status but still at risk.

10. Uninsured/Underinsured Motorist Coverage

Protects you if another driver hits your truck and doesn’t have enough insurance, or none at all.

Applies to:

  • Hit-and-run accidents
  • Drivers with state-minimum liability
  • Collisions where the at-fault driver can’t pay
